Burgos

The Castilian-Leonese city of Burgos, located on the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago de Compostela, preserves important vestiges of its medieval splendour.

What was the capital of the unified kingdom of Castile and León for five centuries, boasts one of the masterpieces of Spanish Gothic architecture, its Cathedral, declared a World Heritage Site. As well as visiting the historic centre of Burgos, we can also discover the province through interesting routes along the banks of the Duero and Arlanza rivers. Good places to enjoy a rich and varied gastronomy.

A few kilometres from the prehistoric site of Atapuerca, a World Heritage Site, is the city of Burgos, crossed by the Arlanzón River. Founded as a military burgh, it gradually developed during the Middle Ages into a mercantile city of great economic power. The fact that it was the capital of the unified kingdom of Castile and León (between the 10th and 15th centuries), its privileged position on the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago and its monopoly on the merino wool trade contributed to this development. All this splendour has left a deep mark on Burgos today. At the foot of the walled Castle Hill, from the remains of which one of the best views of the city can be enjoyed, lies the old medieval quarter. Highlights include the Mudejar-style Arch of San Esteban and the Gothic church of the same name, which houses the Museum of the Altarpiece. Another important church is that of San Nicolás, where we can contemplate a magnificent polychrome alabaster altarpiece.
